Environmental Studies - A & AS Level
LEVEL 3
Environmental Studies is a subject that deals with many current issues. Topics covered include global warming and managing environmental change.
The subject can be combined with vocational courses or A Levels in the Sciences, Arts or Humanities although ideally complementing the courses of Geography and Biology.
What will I need?
5 GCSEs at grade A* – C to include Mathematics and English, Science (additional not applied) at grade CC is also required.
What will I do?
Year 1 (AS Level)
- The Living Environment: Conditions required for life on earth, wildlife conservation, ecosystems and ecology, important land resources like national parks and how they are conserved, practical skills.
- The Physical Environment: the atmosphere including global warming and ozone depletion, hydrosphere including water resources and their management, rock and mineral resources and extraction, soil characteristics, biogeochemical cycles (like Carbon & Nitrogen) and mans impact on these, practical skills.
Year 2 (A Level)
Energy resources and the Environmental Pollution
- Future problems of energy supply and how these may be resolved
- Properties of pollutants to explain why some materials or forms of energy cause environmental damage
- Minimising releases, treating effluents and managing the damage caused by pollutants. Biological resources and sustainability
- Factors controlling human population growth in relation to the demands placed upon the planet's resources and life support systems
- Food production and forestry systems
- Study of the sustainability of human lifestyles.
How will I be taught?
Lessons and lectures are underpinned by tutorial support, seminar presentations, assignments, individual study, group discussion and Interactive Learning Technologies (ILT) and field investigations.
How will I be assessed?
Ongoing assessment of coursework, assignments and formal examinations
Where will it take me?
Environmental Studies is ideal training for a number of careers in the increasingly relevant environmental sector.
