School Leavers - Learning opportunities for the 16 to 19 age range

Tap Into The New Apps! It’s Your Call

Are you about to leave school and still think that apprenticeships are something your Grandad did years ago? Well think again. Apprenticeships have been around since the Middle Ages but over the years they’ve grown into something big - and at Stourbridge College, it’s the new APP that everyone’s talking about!

Sir Alex Ferguson and Jamie Oliver both started their working careers as apprentices and look how far they’ve come! APPS aren’t all about construction trades – even though we’ve got a wide variety of courses available in that industry – and they’re not just for the boys.

Don’t take our word for it... See for yourself what an APP can do for you. If you’re currently working in any of these areas and want to boost your career chances, consider an APP:

  • Motor Vehicle & Tyre Fitting
  • Electrical Installation
  • Gas Service Installation
  • Plastering
  • Electrical Servicing
  • Fitted Interiors
  • Retail & Warehouse
  • Child Care & Teaching Assistant
  • Team Leading
  • Sport
  • Wall & Floor Tiling
  • Customer Service
  • Fenestration/Glazier
  • Engineering & Manufacturing
  • Business & IT
  • Brickwork
  • Carpentry & Joinery
  • Plumbing
  • Painting & Decorating
  • Maintenance & Operations

One day a week at college, four days a week at work, cash in your pocket and a qualification to get you moving.

APPS Employment Success

Five Stourbridge College students have been taken on by local employers after successfully completing apprenticeships in construction related trades proving that APPS really do work!

Construction Apprentices

Sam Hunt and James Harris, both 17 and Robert Bloomer, 18, have all been employed by Gameson Joinery and Joshua Kistner, 20, and George Johnstone, 18, have been employed by Woodcraft Joinery.

All five students began on a Full Time Carpentry & Joinery course, and now spend four days working with their employers and one day at Stourbridge College’s Advanced Technology Centre in Brierley Hill perfecting their trade.

Kayleigh Means Business

Kayleigh Curtis

Kayleigh Curtis, 23, started an apprenticeship in Business Administration NVQ Level 2 at Stourbridge College when she left Thorns Community School at 16 and only six years later she’s been appointed Executive Assistant to the Principal at Stourbridge College.

“I left school with GCSEs but the Business Administration APP gave me an opportunity to get into the world of work four days a week whilst studying at college for one day. I started my career at Stourbridge College working with the Centre Manager at the Advanced Technology Centre covering reception, dealing with students, typing and learning basic business skills. I was earning £50 a week and progressed onto my Level 3 NVQ, securing a full time job as Faculty Administrator shortly afterwards.

“Earning while learning has given my career a great kick start! I’ve bought my own house, have my own car and my new job as Executive Assistant to the Principal has boosted my wages as well as my confidence. When I left school I was quite shy but studying for my qualifications has really added to my skills. I’m hoping to study further and hope that one day I’ll move on to a more advanced position with even more responsibility.”
