Art and Design - BTEC Foundation Diploma
Level 3 and 4 (units 8 & 9)
What will I need?
If you are under 21 you must have one of the following:
- 4 GCSE passes at grade A*-C PLUS an AVCE Single/ Double Award combined with at least one AS subject
- National Diploma (Art and Design related)
- Two AS subjects
- One full A Level (A2)
You will also need a keen interest in Art and Design. We welcome applications from mature students. If you are over 21, have few qualifications but are interested in the visual arts, please get in touch with us to talk about how we can help you.
How long is the course?
One year.
What will I do?
You will enjoy introductions to specialist pathways including:
- Fine Art (painting, sculpture, printmaking)
- Textiles (constructed, woven, printed)
- Graphic Communication (corporate, packaging, illustration)
- 3D Design (product, jewellery, furniture, interior, architecture)
- Digital Applications (computer-based includes Adobe Photoshop and Flash Animation)
- Fashion Design (garment construction, Fashion Illustration, Marketing and promotion)
Particular emphasis is placed on individual development and encouraging a personal approach. You will narrow the field of your enquiry and select a single specialist pathway to further explore your ideas and technical practice. You will write your own project and later exhibit your work.
How will I be taught?
Lessons and lectures are underpinned by tutorial support and seminar presentations, assignments, individual study, group discussion, projects, demonstrations (technical and practical) and Interactive Learning Technologies (ILT).
An integral part of the course is specialist research visits to galleries, museums and other places of interest. Trips planned for 2009/10 are residential visits to London and Amsterdam. Other visits include the Ikon Gallery, Compton Verney and the Clothes Show.
How will I be assessed?
Ongoing assessment of coursework, assignments and projects.
Where will it take me?
The normal progression route is university with an average 99% of students going on to study for BA (Hons) degrees.
