Children’s Care, Learning and Development - BTEC National Diploma

LEVEL 3

This course is appropriate for those considering employment as a qualified Nursery Nurse or wishing to progress to higher education to undertake a related degree programme.

What will I need?

6 GCSEs at grade A* - C to include English Language at grade B or above To progress to university you will also need at least a grade C in Mathematics; and to do a teaching degree, Science at grade C or above.

How long is the course?

Two years – Full time

What will I do?

Work Experience

  • You will undertake work experience in a variety of Early Years and other appropriate settings.

In College

18 units covering such areas as:

  • How children and babies grow and develop into adults
  • How to care for babies and children
  • How to care for babies, children and adolescents who have special needs
  • How to support, communicate and encourage children to learn
  • The issues surrounding child protection
  • Child psychology and theoretical perspectives
  • You may also take the opportunity to get a First Aid Certificate
  • You will be assessed through projects and assignments and work placement reports

Placement

You will gain work experience in a range of childcare settings, e.g. Nursery School, Preschool. You will carry out activities with the children and work with support staff in dayto- day activities.

How will I be taught?

By a team of experienced childcare professionals. In placement you will be supported by an Employment Link Coordinator. Your tutor will guide you to complete the practical aspects of the course.

How will I be assessed?

Continuous assessment of coursework and internally set assignments on relevant units

Where will it take me?

This course provides you with a licence to practise as a fully qualified Nursery Nurse. It is also a well-accepted entry qualification to university to study degree courses such as:

  • Nursing
  • Teaching
  • Childhood Studies
  • Social Work

You may choose to go directly into employment.
