BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business (HND)
Introduction
This course is for people looking to build a career in business or a related role. You will develop your business skills across a wide variety of areas. There will be many guest lectures from the Retail, Fashion, Hospitality and Travel and Tourism Industries to reinforce your understanding of different business environments and retail sectors. It is also an ideal route to the final year of a Degree course in Business or a business subject area.
Entry Requirements
A minimum of 120 points on the UCAS tariff, which includes success in at least one 6-unit subject in GCE or VCE A Level or success in a vocational 12-unit double award (excluding General Studies)
OR a recognised access course with at least 14 points (including 12 at Level 6)
OR business experience in a business environment (over 21s only).
NB: You will also be expected to take part in an interview to gain a place on the course. Key Skills UCAS points are accepted.
How long is the course?
The course runs two days a week for 34 weeks per year for two years during which candidates will attend directed study lessons for approximately 12.5 hours per week.
Programme Aims
- Provide learners with opportunities to develop academic skills appropriate for a range of progression options.
- Provide grounding for key concepts and business practical skills required in the retail industry.
- Encourage learners to develop skills in how to develop a successful business plan.
- Enable learners to apply a range of transferrable skills to subject related topics, issues and situations.
- Encourage learners to apply theoretical understanding and evaluation to complex content.
Programme Content
You will need to take units giving a total of 240 credits over two years, including:
Eight Core Units Including:
- Business Environment (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Managing Financial Resources and Decisions (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Organisations and Behaviour (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Marketing Principles (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Aspects of Contract and Negligence for Business (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Business Decision Making (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Business Strategy (15 Credits - Level 5)
- Research Project (20 Credits – Level 5)
115 Credits may be obtained from the following units (other units are available):
- Personal and Professional Development (15 Credits – Level 5)
- Managing Business Activities to achieve results (15 credits – Level 4)
- Advertising and Promotion in Business (15 Credits – Level 4)
- Managing Human Resources (15 Credits – Level 4)
Level 5 units are delivered in the second year of the course and are tailored to the current cohort of students. Optional modules may change due to the differing interests of the student group.
Mode of Delivery
Lessons and lectures are underpinned by tutorial support and seminar presentations, assignments, individual study, group discussion, projects and Interactive Learning Technologies (ILT).
Method of Assessment
A variety of assessment methods will be used including; ongoing assessment of coursework, case studies, assignments, research and work-based projects.
Progression
BTEC HNDs are well established qualifications with a proven track record of success. They are a recognised and popular route to university leading to the final year of a Bachelor Degree or to a specialised Bachelor Degree top-up, which usually lasts one academic year.
