Sam Makes In-Roads
Sam Moore, 24, has designs on a career in the motor industry and joined Stourbridge College in 2008 to study Motor Vehicle Level 1 – and after putting her foot on the accelerator she’s just started her Level 3 and is hoping to take advantage of the variety of opportunities on offer once she’s fully qualified.
A single mom and living locally, Sam left Ridgwood School with some GCSEs and decided to find work straight away. She said: “Most of my friends were leaving school and going straight into work so I got a job at a tennis club and worked there for five years. Then I had my son Jake and it really changed the way I thought about my life so I took advice from Connexions in Stourbridge and, because I’d always been really interested in cars, they pointed me in the direction of Stourbridge College.”
Sam has really flourished in what is considered a traditionally male dominated environment and when she started her Level 1 course she was the only female but the course is becoming more popular with girls. Sam is looking forward to a career in the motor industry and will be considering a variety of options including working for key car manufacturers in the region or service management.
Liz Learns the Art of the Built Environment
Liz Reid, 15, was attracted by the choice of over 700 jobs available on completion of her Diploma in Construction & the Built Environment.
Being interested in art, she was drawn to the fact that she could use her brain and get more involved in technical drawing. She really enjoyed studying the units of work which included foundations, sub structures and super structures –and she wasn’t phased at all by being the only girl on the course! She said: “I’ve always got on better with boys and it’s been no problem at all. My mom’s granddad was an architect and the Diploma seemed to offer a really good way of starting to study whilst I was still at school – it’s a different way of learning that really appealed to me.” Liz is keeping her options open about the future direction of her career.
