Vote of thanks from proud mum
Proud mum Grace Shepherd rang Stourbridge College recently to say thanks for the help given to her son William who studied for a BTEC Construction Diploma with the college.
William Shepherd
Grace said: “William suffers from dyslexia and during his time at Stourbridge College he received the help and support needed to overcome his difficulties. The Essential Skills team and course leader Mick Tarr were especially supportive.
“After a very helpful initial interview William was offered the assistance he needed and they discussed his progress at every stage throughout his studies.”
As part of the programme to help overcome his difficulties William was one of first students to be issued with a college laptop computer which helped him with his studies and helped him to achieve his Diploma award.
William then went on to Loughborough University where he achieved a First Class Honours degree in Civil Engineering.
Now living in Derbyshire, William has recently qualified as a Chartered Engineer and said of his time at Stourbridge: “The grounding I received at Stourbridge College prepared me for university. My tutors Mick Tarr and Paul Hicks made sure I understood the basic engineering principles and this played a major part in helping with my degree studies.”
Now a Project Engineer for British Waterways and with an impressive BEng (Hons) after his name, William manages a team of 4 project managers and is responsible for maintenance and repair projects ranging from £50,000 to £2.8 million covering over 200 miles of canals.
William added: “It’s thanks to Stourbridge College that I have been able to achieve my educational qualifications which will enable me to further develop my career with British Waterways.”
