Innovative construction techniques at the ATC
Topblock Thin Joint System
Brickwork apprentices and full-time students learnt about a pioneering construction technique at a workshop led by an industry giant.
Budding builders joined architects, contractors, sub-contractors and lecturers from the Black Country for demonstrations by Tarmac at Stourbridge College.
At the Advanced Technology Centre, the eager audience got to grips with the company's Topblock Thin Joint System, a modern method of construction using traditional components in an innovative way.
Exploring case studies and watching demonstrations, they were also treated to 'have a go' sessions.
ATC Director Bob Howlett said: "Stourbridge College is a Centre of Vocational Excellence for Construction and the Built Environment and we were pleased to welcome guests from the construction industry and other educational establishments to obtain practical experience in this new technique.
"The success of the event underlines the importance of the developing new learning opportunities, to provide the skills required to use modern methods of construction."
Workshop co-ordinator from Tarmac, Brian Hewkin, said working in partnership with Stourbridge College was a real benefit to everyone involved.
"We work with the college quite regularly and it not only introduces the ATC students to modern construction methods but helps local employers," he said.
"It's not always easy when you're working to stay up-to-date but this allows them to keep their hand in with education. "It is a very successful scheme."
