The visit is part of a larger campaign to raise awareness of the Fair Trade Organisation, which promotes the use of products which ensure a better deal for small-scale, vulnerable producers in developing countries by giving them a secure, guaranteed price which covers the costs of production. This gives them the security of knowing that they can plan for their future.

Michaela Vallance secretary of the Stourbridge Town Fair Trade Group said: “Our aim is to get Stourbridge designated a Fair Trade Town and to do this we need to get a proportion of traders and organisations to stock and use at least two Fair Trade products.

“It is really important that people ask for Fair Trade products in shops. There are over 2000 products available which include wines, fruits and cotton goods, as well as the better known tea, coffee and sugar.”

Stourbridge College Director of Learner Support Pauline Hollis said “Our students and staff have enjoyed the opportunity to sample some of the Fair Trade products and to find out why it is so important to support growers and producers from overseas.”
