Changes in Technology
Malcolm Batham explains how the old AVO meter has evolved into today’s digital multimeter with Aaron Rowley who is studying Electrical Installation. Malcolm began his studies with the college in 1957, now aged 70 his expertise is still in demand at the college as a senior assessor.

In 1947, Stourbridge Technical School offered courses in Electrical Engineering and a Junior Electricians course costing 7 shillings and 6 pence. Since that date Stourbridge College, (formerly Foley College and then Stourbridge College of Technology and Art) has become synonymous with the provision of high quality electrical training.

Over years, the Electrical industry has seen many changes, both in the type of equipment it uses, and in the regulations that govern all installation work.

Stourbridge College has kept pace with these changes in order to provide the region with a constant supply of highly trained and knowledgeable electricians and electrical engineers.

Today, the Electrical Installation Department of Stourbridge College is based at the Advanced Technology Centre, Brierley Hill, where the courses are delivered using state-of-the-art learning technology.

Each year the students and staff gather for the annual awards presentations, and this year’s event will be in the form of a Celebration Evening taking place on Tuesday 10th July.

The organisers would like to invite anyone who studied electrical installation with the college over the last 60 years.

Event organiser and Head of the Electrical Department, Martyn Gibbons said: “It’s amazing to think of the success that has been achieved by some of the people who have trained with us. Many have their own business, some have become Vice Principles and some lecture with us at the present. It has been the college’s privilege to be influential in the development of so many”.

If you would like to be included in this presentation evening that will be will be fairly informal and will include a tour of the centre facilities, please contact Kayleigh Curtis on 01384 343 140 or email kayleigh.curtis@stourbridge.ac.uk
