Sara Stafford, 32, is in her second and final year studying for an HNC in Construction at Stourbridge College ATC and was nominated by her tutors for her exceptional standard of work, described as "over and beyond" expectations.

Weaver PLC initiated and sponsors the annual award as part of its ongoing commitment to raising the profile of the construction industry as a valuable and rewarding career.

Mark Weaver, group marketing director, said: "The award encourages students to excel in their studies, which not only benefits their own future career potential, but also standards within the industry.

"Construction is one of the UK's major wealth creators and is set to grow enormously. However, it can only do so if employers encourage a wide range of individuals to consider it as a viable career path."

Sara initially joined Thomas Vale Construction in Stourport as an administrator, but liked the business so much she decided to switch careers and embark on her studies. She is now an assistant materials buyer within the company's design and build division.

Sara explained: "Originally the admin job was just a temporary stop-gap, but I enjoyed learning about the process of construction so much that I knew this was what I really wanted to do. I enrolled at Stourbridge College ATC and have gained a huge amount of technical knowledge as well as met some great people who have taught me a lot."

Steve Perkins, assistant director for construction and the built environment at Stourbridge College ATC, said:

"Sara initially had real concerns about changing careers and having no previous experience in the industry, but she had absolutely nothing to worry about as she is extremely hard working, dedicated and produces work of an exceptional standard.

"Sara also possesses excellent communications skills and is proving to be a very able ambassador for the industry."

Mark Weaver concluded:

"Sara exemplifies the qualities needed by construction companies to grow their businesses and we wish her every success in her new chosen career."
