Stourbridge Historic Site is Sold
Stourbridge College has today announced the conclusion of the sale of Its Church Street Site in Stourbridge.
The historic site has been sold to Redditch based company BBLB Architects who intend to use the building as a practice office and residential accommodation.
Project Director for Stourbridge College, Neil Stamps said “The building has been unused for three years as it was deemed to be no longer suitable for educational purposes, and as such has become surplus to requirements.
The disposal of the site is part of the colleges overall estate strategy and is a key part of the funding for the new Visual and Performing Arts and A Level Centre at Brierley Hill.
The building enjoys a number of interesting architectural features including terracotta facade, stained glass windows and ornamental stairway balustrades. Due to the grade II listing on the building any development will have to be agreed with DMBC Conservation Officer as well as the planning authority.”
Dating from around1904 the building was designed by the municipal architect of the day F Woodward and was formally the town library and technical college. Scottish born philanthropist Andrew Carnegie contributed £3,000 to the library's foundation and a further £700 to the 1908 newsroom extension.
Mr Stamps added “The conclusion of the sale means that this historic building will once again be put to good use and ensure the fabric of the building is preserved.”
