Art Show Dream Come True

Stourbridge College art student Alexandra Mills has proved that her painting is great for the Tate! The Stourbridge 19 year old entered a competition in the Times newspaper and was one of twenty four 11-18 year olds nationally to have her work selected and exhibited at the prestigious London art gallery.

The Tate/Times Painting Challenge received over 1,000 entries and was inspired by the Poetry & Dream Wing showcasing some of the world’s greatest surrealist work. Ann Coxon, Assistant Curator of displays at Tate Modern and one of the judges, said: “We were looking for the obvious things such as technique, originality and imagination.”

Alex’s painting, Dream Landscape, was inspired by the colours in Leonor Fini’s painting ‘Little Hermit Sphinx’ and the idea of dreams as a landscape like in Paul Nash’s ‘Landscape from a Dream.’ She said: “I’ve dabbled with the surrealist style before. My painting was based on a photograph taken in Cornwall but I adapted it to suit the competition’s style. I was thrilled when it was chosen and it was a dream come true seeing my work exhibited at the Tate Modern.”

Patrick Caines, Programme Area Manager for Broad Based Art & Performing Arts at the college, said: “We are proud of Alex’s achievement and this goes to show what calibre of art student we are lucky to have here at Stourbridge College.”

Alex is currently doing a one year Art Foundation Course at the college and is due to study architecture at Bath University.
