From Stourbridge To Las Palmas!
Stourbridge College second year students studying their National Certificate in Travel & Tourism jetted off on a recreational study visit to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria recently - a step in the right direction as they work towards their final exams.
Students in Las Palmas
Eleven students and two members of staff flew out to the Canary Islands to spend a week learning about the travel and tourism trade, meeting with the Gran Canaria Tourist Board and visiting one of the island’s biggest resorts to see how they plan events and conferences.
Clare Bird, Travel & Tourism teacher, said: “The students packed a lot into a week, learning about the cruise sector, finding out how holiday reps plan activities for children and the Gran Canaria Tourist Board took them on a tour of Las Palmas so that they could see the tourist trade first hand. This was a valuable exercise and great practical experience for the students who organised the entire trip themselves – looking at everything from balancing the budget through to booking currency and travel insurance.”
Juana Rosa Aleman from the National Tourist Board of Gran Canaria said: “Gran Canaria has changed over the years and tourists arriving via cruise ships is increasing. Package holidays are also on the up and it was interesting for the students to realise the changes that occur in the travel and tourist industry.”
