Students on Course for Career Challenge

Six Stourbridge College students took part in a Royal Navy competition held in Wales recently – and it was good grounding to prepare them for their future roles in the public services.

The Public Services Challenge was organised by the Royal Navy and eight colleges from across the country took part in challenges such as navigational exercise, tug of war, a quiz, in-door climbing, assault course as well as tests for team work, leadership and communication.

Russ Henry, Assistant Principal for Vocational & Professional Studies at Stourbridge College, said: “All the students who took part in this challenge are studying Level 3 Public Services BTEC qualifications. They are all set on pursuing careers in public services – two want to join the Royal Marines, one wants to go in the Royal Navy, one wants to be a police officer, one a fireman and one a bodyguard who wants to set up his own security business. This type of challenge offers extra curricular activity additional to their course work which enhances their learning.”

Gemma Hawkins, Placement Officer Health & Social Care, added: “It was a fantastic day out for the lads who came a respectable fifth out of eight teams. They learned a lot about themselves and it gave them some idea of the kind of challenges they might face when they qualify for the careers that they have chosen.”
