Students Race and Bake for Cancer Research
BTEC Travel and Tourism students at Stourbridge College held a charity fundraising event recently to raise money for Cancer Research – and the race was on to see who could raise the most cash.
Centre: Alicia Burns, with fellow BTEC Travel and Tourism students selling cakes outside the refectory.
The students were split into two groups to compete against each other to see who could raise the most money.
One group baked and sold cakes and others simulated rowing the channel on rowing machines provided by the college’s sports department.
Alicia Burns, 18, one of the BTEC students who took part said: “We chose to make and sell cakes outside the college refectory as everyone uses it at lunch time so we knew we would have plenty of customers.”
Sophie Roberts and Keleigh Chance split the twenty one mile row across the Channel between them, while the others collected donations and sponsors from staff and students around college. Sophie said: “We chose to row the Channel as we thought it would be something different, and students could come and watch and cheer us on.”
Cancer Research provided the girls with fundraising packs including t-shirts, balloons and collection tins. Over £290 was raised for Cancer Research, which was gratefully received.
