Students Make The Swap
First year students volunteered during tutorial time to help Stourbridge Fairtrade volunteers hand out samples and sell fair-trade products as part of fairtrade fortnight. They aimed to undercut the prices of vending machine items to encourage people to ‘make the swap’.
Rachel Collins, Fairtrade volunteer, Tasha Evans, Linsey Bourne and Virginia Williams, Chair of the Stourbridge Fairtrade Group.
Linsey Bourne and Tasha Evans, LEA programme students were among the students who volunteered and handed out free tasters of fairtade chocolate, cookies, flapjacks and fruit bars. The work they did at the event will be fed into their CoPE Qualification (cert of personal education) to support them with their studies.
Linsey Bourne said “I didn’t know much about fairtrade products, I tried the tasters and I liked them all, I will definitely look for the fairtrade logo when buying chocolate and I’ve found out Cadburys and Kit Kat are now fairtrade.”
Virginia Williams, Chair of the Stourbridge Fairtrade Group spoke to students and explained the importance of fair-trade and what it means to the farmers who produce the ingredients.
Fairtrade volunteers encouraged staff and students to swap an item they would normally buy for a Fairtrade equivalent. Anyone who swaps an item such as tea, coffee, wine, chocolate, sugar or body wash for a Fairtrade alternative can register them at www.thebigswap.org.uk so they can be counted towards the target. Alternatively, you can contact the Fairtrade group on 01384 394118 and the group will pass the swap on to the Fairtrade Foundation.
