The event was attended by HM Inspector of Health and Safety, Paul Thompson, of the Health and Safety Executive. Paul, assisted by the Vice Principal Louise Jones, presented prizes of Westfield vouchers, goody bags and trophies to the winning team, Carpentry & Joinery. Paul said “The ATC arm of the college provides an excellent learning environment with superb facilities. The competition was a brilliant teaching and learning tool and I think other colleges throughout the country could benefit from holding similar events. This event ensures that not only is information given but that it is also remembered to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries in the construction sector.”

Eight teams from Electrical, the Built Environment, Plumbing, Painting & Decorating, Carpentry & Joinery, Gas, Brickwork and Motor Vehicle have battled it out answering a random selection of questions relating to Health & Safety facts, law and procedures with two teams making it through to the Grand Final.

The Grand Final took place this week between Carpentry & Joinery and Painting & Decorating. Both teams were knowledgeable but Carpentry & Joinery were outstanding. Congratulations to Jake 'the Hoff' Chamberlain, Chris Edwards, Ryan Middleton and Tim Salt, team captain.

Gill Hill, Health & Safety Officer at Stourbridge College, said: “The quiz has been enthusiastically fought with teams and their supporters conducting themselves in a great sportsmanlike manner! The questions have been designed to make students think about the implications and importance of Health & Safety on a day to day basis. I plan to hold the competition on an annual basis and roll it out across the college in the next academic year.”
