Art Commission – Art & Design Centre

Background

The college is investing £12m in building a new Art & Design Centre in Brierley Hill which will make a vital contribution to the regeneration of the new strategic town centre for the Dudley Borough. The Centre will accommodate 1,000 students, 36 staff and will offer a variety of Level 1 to 6 courses in Art & Design subjects. The building has been designed to a very high specification incorporating environmentally friendly features which contribute to the Government’s renewable energy agenda. It will be located along the aptly named Venture Way.

Project Brief

An Art Commission is being offered to artists to create a piece of work that reflects the Art & Design activity in the building, how this relates to education in general and how it reflects the local, surrounding area. The commissioned piece will be installed in the foyer area of the new building so will be a centre piece focus for all visitors, staff and students.

Terms of Reference are as follows:

  • The budget is set at £15,000 to include design, materials, installation, attending meetings and any other expenses that may incur
  • The theme is “TRANSITION” which should reflect developments within the Creative Arts industry and mirrors the regeneration of Brierley Hill with Art & Design moving into this area
  • The commissioned piece can be created in either of the following formats: Fine Art, Textiles or Sculptural to be sited on a wall in reception
  • Dimension of the piece should be no bigger than 2m x ½m wide and 2.2m high
  • The work should be capable of being completed and in its final location within an eight month period allowing an initial two month review period from presentation of initial ideas
  • Commitments to a firm proposal in sketch and written form in detail and scale will be required prior to approval
  • Tender submissions will be judged by a panel made up of Lynette Cutting (Principal), Dave Nolan (Chair of Governors), Andy Sylvester (Assistant Principal, Creative Industries), Tom O’Callaghan (Consultant) and a student representative (tba)

The piece of work should recognise wherever possible the focus on the future of Brierley Hill and its surrounding areas, recognising and acknowledging the functional delivery of the build.
