'Side By Side' at the Fringe

Summer 2002

The 'Side by Side' theatre group produced a slick and professional performance of 'Prometheus' at the 2002 summer’s Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Margaret (Director of the Makaton vocabulary Development project) and Ian Walker attended two of their performances at the Fringe and an article appeared in the Scotsman written by James Mulligan, "I doubt I’ll see another Fringe Company playing with as much heartfelt commitment and sheer pleasure as this group of learning disabled actors from Stourbridge. Come the curtain call to this retelling of the ‘Prometheus’ and other myths, the winning smiles were picket fence wide. The very well rehearsed dozen or so actors mime and dance, play several roles each, and cope well with masses of costume changes and some quite intricate stage business."

The performance had incorporated mime and some Makaton signing using key signs, and was accompanied by a voice over narration of different speakers. The actors showed skills in including the audience and used pauses to develop the maximum effect.
